Nevada State University is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2024 Young Alumni of the Year award, Alumnus of the Year award, President’s Medal, and newest inductees into the Gibson Society; all of whom were celebrated at Nevada State’s Annual Awards ceremony on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
The Second Annual Awards Ceremony represents a cornerstone of Nevada State’s commitment to celebrating the achievements of its alumni and partners, reflecting the university’s mission to empower and uplift students, alumni, and the greater community.
“The individuals and organizations we are honoring this year exemplify the spirit of leadership, community engagement, and dedication that drives Nevada State University forward,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president of Nevada State University. “We are proud to recognize their accomplishments and thank them for their contributions that continue to enrich our community.”
Nevada State has chosen the below individuals to be recognized and honored for the corresponding prestigious awards:
Young Alumni of the Year
● Efren Vega, Class of 2017 and Estefania Sanchez-Vega, Class of 2018
Efren and Estefania have demonstrated remarkable dedication and success in their careers showcasing what it takes to overcome adversity as first-generation immigrants, making impactful contributions to their community, and setting an inspiring example for fellow graduates and future generations.
Alumnus of the Year
● Brian Hansen, Class of 2012
Brian is a passionate advocate for the anesthesia field. He attributes his career success to Nevada State’s accelerated programs, which enabled him to enter the healthcare sector swiftly and build a rewarding career, positively impacting hundreds of individuals annually.
President’s Medal
The President’s Medal was established to recognize community members who have significantly contributed to the development of Nevada State University and Nevada.

MGM Resorts International was selected as a President’s Medal honoree for remaining steadfast in its charge to affect positive change in the community. The company has not wavered in its commitment to diversity, and is proud to support efforts that are reflective of all parts of our community and amplifying a variety of voices. - Communities in Schools of Nevada
Community in Schools of Nevada was selected as a President’s Medal honoree for its ongoing dedication to achieving transformative outcomes in our community’s schools. By investing resources in Nevada’s most high-needs schools, they are ensuring our students are getting the support they need to thrive and unlock their full potential.
Gibson Society
The Gibson Society is a giving society at Nevada State University for the school’s most generous donors who have provided $750,000 or more to the institution. It was the first giving society established by the university and its mission is to promote the growth and improvement of the university. The foundation receives and administers private gifts to the institution, which support students and faculty in a variety of ways, including scholarships, construction projects, and daily operations.
The 2024 inductees include:
- The NV Energy Foundation
Recognized for its strategic and generous investment in Nevada State, the NV Energy Foundation is helping expand the university’s community outreach through workforce development and learning opportunities for students. - John and Joy Gombeda
Honored for their planned gift to establish an endowed scholarship, John and Joy’s generous investment in Nevada State will ensure future nursing school graduates will be able to complete their training without financial burden during their final year of study.
“The dedication of these honorees inspires us to keep pushing boundaries, creating opportunities, and building a community where education transforms lives,” continued Dr. Pollard.
