How to Develop a Policy
Policies emerge from an individual or unit’s need to resolve a recurring issue and/or streamline a process. Our Nevada State Policy on Policy and Procedures outlines expectations and standards for how to create institutional policy and corresponding procedures. Before you consider submitting a policy request, please ensure your proposal meets the following requirements. All institutional policies must:
Support the University’s mission and strategic initiatives
Apply campus-wide
Promote operational efficiency and effectiveness
Implement Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) policy
Achieve compliance with laws, rules, regulations, or standards
To get started with your submission, please review the policy guide and complete the Policy Development Worksheet.
Policy Request
Once you have ensured your proposal meets the requirements outlined above, submit your request.

Templates
To ensure a smooth policy development process, please use our official templates to draft your content:
Policy Template
Procedure Template
Guideline Template
If your proposal is intended for a more focused audience, it may be better suited to be published as unit guidelines rather than an institutional policy. We can provide you with support in determining which is the most appropriate format and resources for best practices. Contact us at policy@nevadastate.edu to discuss your idea!
