Counseling Services

Overview

Whether you are just beginning your college journey, are well into your academic program, or are nearing graduation, there can be times when maintaining balanced mental health can be a challenge for students. Attending to mental health is a key element of being successful in meeting your goals. Counseling wants to be an ally to you, along your path to learn, grow, and succeed in completing your college degree. We use a brief counseling model to that end. If it is determined that the student might benefit from longer-term counseling or other types of services, referrals can be discussed.

Services

All Nevada State University students have access to 5 free counseling appointments. They can be used any time between Fall semester and the end of Spring semester, as long as you are enrolled at the time you want to use your counseling sessions. Those enrolled for the Summer term, have access to 4 free sessions.

Confidentiality

Your participation in counseling is private and confidential. In accordance with state and federal regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), information about you is not released to anyone or any entity, including Nevada State University, faculty or staff, without your written permission. There are limitations to confidentiality, which include:

  • Imminent, life-threatening danger to self or others
  • Concerns of abuse of a child, elderly or dependent adult
  • A court order for the release of client records

Privacy practices for minors (anyone under the age of 18) differ in some ways, and these will be discussed during your first appointment.

Appointments

It is our goal to make counseling easy to access. Counseling appointments are held on campus in the Dawson building, room 164. Virtual appointments are an option.

For the location of DAWSON, see letter “E” under Buildings & Facilities on Campus Map here.

Book an Appointment

Counseling appointments are with Nevada State’s Therapist, Annise Prewitt, MSW, LCSW, CCTP. She is delighted to work with any students, who feel they could use extra support. If you have questions about the process after scheduling, please feel free to email the therapist at: [email protected].

Under 18 Years Old

If you are under 18 years old, please do not use the link above to access counseling at this time. We ask that you email [email protected], indicate that you are a minor, and you will be given further instructions. Both you and a parent/guardian will need to complete the patient registration forms, in a different manner, and your parent/guardian will need to sign and date them.
