Develop A Policy

How to Develop a Policy

Policies emerge from an individual or unit’s need to resolve a recurring issue and/or streamline a process. Our Nevada State Policy on Institutional Policy and Procedure outlines expectations and standards for how to create institutional policy and corresponding procedures. Before you consider submitting a policy request, please ensure your proposal meets the following requirements. All institutional policies must:

V
Support the institution in achieving its mission and implementing its strategic plan
V

Apply campus-wide

V

Promote operational efficiency and effectiveness

V
Implement Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) policy
V
Comply with statutes, regulations, ordinances, and industry standards and requirements
V
Advance commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
V
Minimize organizational risk

Initiate or Revise a Policy

If your proposal aligns with the requirements outlined above, submit your request.

The Process

Once you submit a policy initiation request form, you will receive confirmation from policy@nevadastate.edu that it was received. Below is the road map the policy will follow if it is approved for development. Click here for a more detailed version.

Templates

To ensure a smooth development process, please email policy@nevadastate.edu to request the official template to draft your policy content.

If your proposal is intended for a more focused audience, please consider developing unit guidelines. We can provide you with support in determining which is the most appropriate format and resources for best practices. Contact us at policy@nevadastate.edu to discuss your idea!
