Interdisciplinary Studies (BA) – Online Pathway

Your Degree, Your Way – Now Online or In-Person

At Nevada State College, we value pioneering thinkers, independence, and innovation. To support these values, we created the Interdisciplinary Studies program, which allows you to design your own individualized course of study and focus on your own particular interests.

Instead of choosing a traditional major, Interdisciplinary Studies students select two concentrations that combine to become the equivalent of a single major. This allows hundreds of possible degree combinations, such as:

  • Education and Psychology
  • Health & Wellness and Promotion
  • Environmental Science and Business
  • English and History

Each of these combinations allows students to look at problems from multiple perspectives and develop innovative solutions. To help students explore the ways their two concentrations intersect, the College offers two independent courses, ISC 300 and 495. In these classes, instructors provide individual guidance and personalized attention that leads students through the completion of a capstone project. This project provides concrete evidence of the student’s abilities and can be used on the job market or when applying to graduate school.

Online Pathway

Nevada State now offers an online pathway through our BA in Interdisciplinary Studies. This option will allow you to complete an entire degree remotely, without any required in-person courses. If you are interested in an interdisciplinary program but prefer the accessibility of online classes, this is a terrific option for you.

The online option has the same requirements as our existing BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, and it is led by the same faculty who teach our in-person courses. Our commitment to you is a series of regularly scheduled online interdisciplinary courses that will allow you to progress through the program.

Since the online pathway is not a separate degree, you can also take a combination of courses each semester: online, hybrid, or in-person. This flexibility allows you to complete a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies in a way that works for your schedule and preferred learning style.

Concentration Options for an Online Pathway

The BA/BS in Interdisciplinary Studies requires you to complete two 24-credit concentrations. If you wish to complete this degree entirely online, you will need to combine two of these three concentrations:

  • Leadership
  • History
  • Education

Several other concentrations are available, but they may require in-person coursework.

Signing Up
If you are interested in signing up for the online pathway in our BA just follow the instructions on our application page. When you reach the prompt asking you to select your desired degree plan, select “History (Online Pathway).”

Degree Outcomes

  • Synthesize a personalized set of outcomes and independently work towards achieving them. Early in the program, the Interdisciplinary Studies student will work with the ISC faculty to develop these outcomes and create a plan for demonstrating them upon program completion;
  • Critically and creatively research, write, and present in a way that makes logical and theoretical connections between multiple areas of study, especially in the studentu2019s selected disciplines. Students will be able to recognize the strengths and limitations of various disciplinary perspectives and integrate these perspectives to present unique solutions to complex problems;
  • Demonstrate a mastery of their personalized outcomes. This outcome is illustrated by the completion of a final capstone project or a comparable series of smaller projects.

Careers

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the top six skills/qualities that employers look for an ideal candidate are:

  • Communication skills (speaking and writing effectively)
  • Strong work ethic
  • Teamwork
  • Ability to show initiative
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving

An interdisciplinary degree is ideal for developing these broad skill sets. As you progress, you will see that even disparate areas of study have similarities. You will begin to synthesize new ideas and make creative connections. To help you understand how to study across disciplines, you will take two Interdisciplinary Studies classes. The first will examine interdisciplinary studies as a concept and the final capstone course will allow you to create a unique project that demonstrates your understanding of your selected disciplines.

Furthermore, the Interdisciplinary Studies degree is well suited for students interested in attending graduate school. Interdisciplinary Studies graduates are interesting, open-minded, and ready for new challenges. They often go on to graduate school or accept positions that require innovative thinking. With a broad foundation, you will be open to new learning methods and able to adapt quickly to the challenges graduate school has to offer. Furthermore, since the program is writing intensive, you will graduate with a solid rhetorical foundation that allows them to write well in multiple situations. The capstone project at the end of ISC 495 highlights this writing ability and gives students physical evidence of their abilities, which may be helpful in the graduate admissions process. Our ISC graduates have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in fields as diverse as game design, history, humanities, law, and library science
