First and Fierce: A Nevada State Guide for First-Generation College Students

Sep 23, 2025 | All Posts

For first-generation students, starting college is both an exciting and powerful milestone. At Nevada State, we know that being the first in your family to attend college means more than just earning a degree. It’s about breaking barriers, setting new standards, and creating opportunities for the future.

Through our First and Fierce program, we provide resources, mentorship, and a supportive community to help you navigate the academic, social, and personal challenges that come with being a trailblazer. Here’s what you should know as you start your journey.

What Does “First-Gen” Mean?

At Nevada State, “first-generation” means neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree. That could mean your parents didn’t attend college, started but didn’t finish, or earned a degree outside the U.S.

Being first-gen is something to be proud of. It shows resilience, determination, and the courage to take on new challenges. But it can also come with unique questions and uncertainties, which is why we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Many first-gen students face challenges like navigating unfamiliar systems, balancing work and school, or finding a sense of belonging on campus. Here are a few tips to get ahead:

  • Ask questions early — Advisors, professors, and staff are here to help, and no question is too small.
  • Get to know your resources — From tutoring to career services, the support you need is already here.
  • Find your community — Programs like First and Fierce connect you with peers and mentors who understand your journey.

First and Fierce: Program Highlights

The First and Fierce program is designed specifically for first-gen students at Nevada State. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Scholarship opportunities for students with a 2.0 GPA or higher who are enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Workshops and events to help you build academic and life skills
  • Mentorship connections with faculty, staff, and peers who have walked the first-gen path
  • A welcoming community where your success is celebrated at every step

Academic and Social Support

Nevada State offers a wide range of services to support your success both inside and outside the classroom, and for first-generation students, having access to these resources can make all the difference. When you’re navigating college without a family blueprint to follow, things like financial aid processes, course planning, or networking opportunities can feel overwhelming. That’s where First and Fierce comes in.

First and Fierce students gain exclusive access to events, networking opportunities, and tailored guidance that not only help you adjust to college life, but also position you for long-term success. Whether it’s learning how to communicate with professors, finding internships, managing your time, or building connections with leaders in your field, these supports are designed to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Having a strong network and clear guidance early on doesn’t just help you survive your first semester. It gives you the confidence and skills to thrive all the way through graduation and beyond.

Celebrating First-Gen Wins
