Nevada State University professor Dr. Kebret Kebede recently received a Fulbright Specialist Program award from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to complete a project at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is the first professor at Nevada State to receive this prestigious honor.

Operating in more than 160 countries, the program facilitates the exchange of knowledge and fosters academic partnerships, supporting educational and training efforts around the world. In June, Dr. Kebede presented with the “Bone Health and Bioeconomy” program at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, highlighting the intersection of biomedical innovation, public health, and sustainable economic development.

“It was an honor to represent Nevada State University through the Fulbright Specialist Program this summer,” said Dr. Kebret Kebede. “Collaborating with colleagues at Universiti Sains Malaysia allowed me to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and contribute to larger conversations on a global scale with like-minded colleagues. This experience deepened my commitment to advancing science education and fostering international academic partnerships.”

Dr. Kebede joins a distinguished group of more than 400 U.S. citizens who are selected each year to share their expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program. Participants are chosen based on academic and professional achievements, demonstrated leadership, and their ability to foster long-term collaboration between U.S. and international institutions.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Kebede and honored to celebrate this remarkable accomplishment of his selection as a Fulbright Specialist with him,” said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, Officer in Charge of Nevada State University. “His dedication to student success, commitment to global engagement, and leadership in the sciences exemplify the values we strive to uphold as an institution. This achievement not only honors Dr. Kebede’s outstanding work but also elevates Nevada State’s role on the international academic stage.”

Dr. Kebede has been a valued member of Nevada State’s Department of Physical and Life Sciences since 2003, initially as a part-time instructor and later as an assistant professor beginning in 2005. He currently teaches Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Medical Gross Anatomy, and Global Health. An orthopedic surgeon by training, Dr. Kebede earned his M.D. from Aristotle University and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Medicine and the College of Surgeons. His selection as a Fulbright Specialist marks a significant achievement for Nevada State University, joining Dr. Vanessa Mari, assistant professor of ESL, who was selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in 2019.
