Purpose
The Safety Committee is established to provide a source of expertise and advice about campus safety issues for Nevada State University (NS). The committee will recommend policies to the President through the Vice President for Finance and Business Operations for implementation, thereby assuring:
- A safe campus environment for employees, students, and visitors.
- That NS facilities and activities do not endanger the safety of the general public.
- That NS complies with legal requirements pertaining to safety.
Responsibilities
- Review safety issues, regulations, and guidelines and develop recommendations for NS policies and procedures pertaining thereto.
- Promote development of University policies and programs relating to safety, and when necessary to provide consistency to facilities and projects shared by multiple campuses of the University.
- Encourage coordination and cooperation between and among the academic schools and divisions, and provide, through the Chair, mechanisms for communication, problem solving, and professional development among committee members.
- Encourage coordination and cooperation with external groups, such as other NSHE institutions and units, NSHE Business Center- South, and state and federal agencies as needed.
- Provide NS President and Executive Team with summary annual reports, and other special reports based on institutional inputs. The subject of these reports may include the status of safety, health and environmental programs at NS including the extent of compliance or non-compliance with applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety; the costs (including resources) of compliance, noncompliance, and cost-avoidance; the procurement, use, and disposal of radioactive and hazardous materials; the management of pathological waste; and other such matters as may arise. - Provide NS President and Executive Team with recommendations about new and incremental resource requirements for implementation of compliant safety programs at NS.
- Accomplish such other tasks related to campus safety as may from time to time be assigned to them by the President and/or Vice President of Finance and Business Operations.
Chairs
The Safety Committee shall include officer positions of Chair, Co-Chair, and Secretary. All Officer positions shall serve for a period of two years. Upon completion of the two-year term, The Co-Chair shall transition to the Chair position and Secretary to the Co-Chair position. The Secretary of the Committee shall be elected from the membership at the final meeting of fiscal year in which the position term expires. A new two-year term of office shall commence, for all officer positions, on the date of the first meeting of the fiscal years following the election.
Membership
Membership shall represent the divisions and schools of the University, as follows:
- One member appointed by the Faculty Senate
- One member from Classified Employee Council
- One member from Nevada State Student Alliance
- One member with responsibility for laboratory oversight
- One member from NSHE University Police Services, Southern Command
- One member from University Police Services Office of Emergency
Management
- One member from Business Center South Risk Management and Safety
- One member from Union Representation (ECEC Child Care Worker)
- One member from Facilities
- One member from Human Resources
- One member from Campus Infrastructure
- One member from Division of Culture, Planning and Policy
- One member from Information Technology Services
- One member from Events and Events Services
