Program Overview

Discover your path while earning credits.

Academic & Career Explorers is a guided starting point for students who are still deciding on a major. You’ll make progress on Core requirements while you explore options, declare a major by 30 credits, and meet with a Career Advisor in your first year to connect interests with programs and careers. If you’re leaning toward fields with sequenced prerequisites—like the sciences, health, business, education, speech pathology, or math—plan to start those course series early so you don’t lose time.

As you sample courses, some may count toward both your exploration and your degree plan; just note that a single class can’t fulfill more than one Core area. Keep the graduation basics in view: at least 120 total credits, a minimum 2.0 NSU (and cumulative, if you have transfer credits) GPA, and at least 30 upper-division credits completed at Nevada State.

Career Outlook

Not sure what you want to do after school? The Lightcast Career Assessment is a quick, student-friendly way to discover careers that actually fit you. Take a short quiz to pinpoint what you enjoy and how you like to work, then get a personalized list of careers to explore. Each match includes plain-English summaries—what the job is, what you’d do day-to-day—and you can favorite the ones that catch your eye.

What makes it especially useful is the real-world info attached to every career. You’ll see typical pay, local demand and job outlook, common skills, and the education or training most people take to get there. From there, you can check out nearby programs, browse current job postings, or start planning next steps with an advisor. It’s free, takes just a few minutes to start, and it’s great whether you’re choosing a major, changing direction, or just curious about what’s out there.
