Using Your VA Benefits at NSU
How do I use my VA educational benefits at NSU?
Begin with the Veterans Enrollment Checklist.
Can I receive federal financial aid and VA benefits at the same time?
Yes. You may use VA education benefits alongside federal aid like Pell Grants and student loans. VA benefits do not reduce your eligibility for federal aid.
NSHE Purple Heart Fee Waiver
What is the Purple Heart waiver?
If you received the Purple Heart, NSHE may waive your registration, laboratory, and mandatory fees. The waiver applies after your federal education benefits are applied to your account.
How can I apply for the waiver?
To learn more about the fee waiver and how to apply, please visit the Student Affairs Forms > Additional Forms section on the NSHE Forms website (https://nshe.nevada.edu/info-center/nshe-forms/). The completed form and required supporting documentation must be submitted to the institutional contact listed on the form. Additional questions may also be sent to the institutional contact. Further documents may be required for confirmation.
DOD Tuition Assistance
What should I do before enrolling with DOD Tuition Assistance?
Speak with your Educational Service Officer (ESO) or military counselor first. Submit ALL military and college transcripts, meet with an advisor to finalize your program plan, then register in myNevadaState and submit DODTA authorization to the Military Billing Office.
Montgomery G.I. Bill® (Chapters 30 & 1606)
What is the Montgomery G.I. Bill®?
The Montgomery G.I. Bill® (MGIB) offers education benefits to veterans who served on active duty (Chapter 30) or in the Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606). These benefits help pay for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeships, and more.
How do I apply for the Montgomery G.I. Bill®?
Submit an application at va.gov/education/how-to-apply. Once approved, provide your Certificate of Eligibility to NSU’s Veterans Coordinator and submit a term-based certification request each semester.
Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)
Who qualifies for Chapter 35 benefits?
Chapter 35 provides education benefits to spouses and dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition or who died in the line of duty or as a result of a service-connected disability.
How do I use Chapter 35 at NSU?
Apply through va.gov. After receiving your Certificate of Eligibility, submit a Veterans Certification Request to the NSU Veterans Coordinator each semester.
Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (Chapter 31 / VANEEPS)
What is Chapter 31 or VANEEPS?
Chapter 31, also known as Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) or VANEEPS in Nevada, helps veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, find, and maintain employment through higher education support, counseling, and job placement services.
How do I use Chapter 31 at NSU?
Work with your assigned Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor through the VA. Once approved, the NSU Veterans Coordinator will receive your authorization and coordinate with the Cashier’s Office to manage your tuition, fees, books, and supplies.
Post‑9/11 G.I. Bill® (Chapter 33)
What is the Post‑9/11 G.I. Bill®?
If you served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001—or were honorably discharged within 30 days due to a service-connected disability—you may qualify. It covers in-state tuition & fees at public institutions, a housing stipend, and a veterans book & supply stipend.
Benefits tiers (40 %, 60 %, 70 %, 80 %, 90 %, 100 %) depend on how long you served while on active duty after September 10, 2001.
How do I apply?
Apply online at va.gov/education/post‑9‑11_gibill. VA will send you a Certificate of Eligibility—submit that to NSU’s Veterans Certification Official before term starts.
Can my G.I. Bill® benefits be used with financial aid?
Yes. You may use Post‑9/11 G.I. Bill® benefits while also receiving federal aid—like Pell Grants or student loans. VA benefits do not reduce your eligibility for federal aid.
What is the Forever G.I. Bill?
The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act (Public Law 115‑48) removed the 15‑year time limit to use Chapter 33 benefits for veterans discharged on or after January 1, 2013—and added expanded eligibility, book stipends, and transfer options for service members who agree to serve additional years.
