Jury Duty, Civil & Military Leave

Overview

Nevada State University provides eligible employees with job-protected leave for civic and military obligations, in accordance with applicable laws and university policy.

These leave types allow employees to fulfill legal responsibilities without loss of employment status or required use of accrued leave.

Jury Duty

Employees are provided paid leave when serving on a jury or when required to appear in court as a witness. Time spent on jury duty or court service is not deducted from an employee’s leave balances.

Civil Leave (Voting)

Nevada State University provides paid leave to allow employees to vote when it is not practical to do so outside of working hours.

The amount of leave granted is determined by the distance between the employee’s work location and their polling place, in accordance with Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 293.463.

Voting Leave Guidelines

  • 1 hour if the polling place is 2 miles or less from the work location
  • 2 hours if the polling place is more than 2 miles but not more than 10 miles away
  • 3 hours if the polling place is more than 10 miles away

Employees who anticipate the need to use work time to vote must obtain prior approval from their supervisor.

Supervisors are expected to provide a reasonable opportunity to vote and may not unreasonably deny civil leave requests.

Military Leave

Employees who are members of the Nevada National Guard or federal reserve forces are entitled to paid military leave.

Key Details:

  • Up to 15 working days of paid military leave per calendar year
  • Leave is provided without loss of regular compensation

Additional military leave may be granted for service that exceeds 15 working days, in accordance with applicable laws and university policy.

Important Notes

  • These leave types are separate from annual and sick leave
  • Eligible employees are not required to use accrued leave for these purposes
  • Leave is provided in accordance with state and federal regulations
