Department Overview

The Humanities Department houses programs in literature and writing, languages, and philosophy. Our department boasts not only a traditional literary tract within English studies but also a thriving Creative Writing program and the state’s first Writing Studies program. Our Deaf Studies B.A and ASL Interpreting minor develop students’ understanding of Deaf culture and fluency in American Sign Language, and our Spanish program offers courses for both heritage speakers and students who are new to Spanish. Our Philosophy courses challenge Nevada State’s pre-Law students as well as the general student population with courses focused on critical thinking and ethics–two skills that are integral to being human in a rapidly evolving technological world.

Potential Careers

Students who major in the Humanities develop incredible useful skills—such as communication, analysis, and perspective-taking—and these skills are valued across industries, giving graduates multiple pathways to fulfilling work. Our students go on to find employment across many different careers, including Educators (K-12, Higher Education, and Community Education), Museum Specialists, Librarians, Artists, Industry Managers, Marketing and Sales specialists, Lawyers, Judgers, and Paralegals; Writers and Editors; Social Workers; and Physicians and Surgeons. Students who major in the Humanities report comparable salary and job satisfaction levels as students who major in disciplines outside the Humanities, like engineering and business.
