About TRIO McNair

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program is a comprehensive two-year program structured to prepare undergraduates for successful careers as graduate students, professors, and professional researchers.

How do TRIO McNair Scholars benefit from the program?

TRIO McNair Scholars’ experiences strengthen their graduate applications and prepare them to succeed in the graduate school of their choice. Scholars participate in social and cultural activities to gain a better understanding of academia. They also form a learning community of like-minded scholars to support higher academic achievement.

Who is the TRIO McNair Scholar?

The TRIO McNair Scholar is an eligible undergraduate with a record of academic success who plans to attend graduate school. Scholars uphold the spirit of the program’s namesake: Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the African-American scientist and astronaut whose life and career were cut tragically short in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion.

TRIO McNair Scholars benefit from a wide range of services, including:

  • Assistance with undergraduate progress
  • Tutoring
  • Technology access and assistance
  • GRE prep and testing fee assistance
  • Graduate school search and application assistance
  • Graduate school application fee waivers
  • Introduction to resources for financing graduate school
  • Offsetting expenses for conferences and school visits
  • Connection to special fellowship opportunities

Do you qualify?

Eligibility Requirements

The U.S. Department of Education defines eligibility criteria.

Potential Scholars must be:

  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • An individual earning their first bachelor’s degree
  • An undergraduate at Nevada State University with at least
  • 60 credit hours
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • A first-generation and income-eligible college student or a member of an underrepresented group in graduate education

Definitions

Income-Eligible

An individual whose family’s taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150% of the poverty level amount.

First Generation

An individual whose parents and/or guardians have not completed a four-year (bachelor’s) degree.

Underrepresented

An individual who identifies as one (or more) of the following racial and ethnic groups:

  • Black (non-Hispanic)
  • Hispanic
  • American Indian
  • Alaskan Native*
  • Native Hawaiian*
  • Native American Pacific Islander*
