Gear Up Program
Educational Opportunity Programs
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
GEAR UP is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education that helps students build a clear path to college—starting early and staying with them through high school.
If you’re a motivated student and the first in your family to consider college, GEAR UP provides the guidance, resources, and support to help you prepare, apply, and succeed.
Who GEAR UP Serves
GEAR UP works with entire groups of students (called cohorts), beginning no later than 7th grade and continuing through high school graduation.
The program is designed to support:
- First-generation college-bound students
- Students from low-income households
- Students who want to explore college and career opportunities early
Why GEAR UP Matters
College doesn’t start in your senior year—it starts with preparation, awareness, and support along the way.
GEAR UP helps students:
- Build confidence in their academic abilities
- Understand what it takes to get into college
- Stay on track through middle and high school
- See college as a realistic and achievable goal
What Students Receive
GEAR UP provides long-term, consistent support to help students succeed academically and prepare for life after high school.
Support includes:
- College & Career Exploration – Discover interests and future pathways
- Academic Support – Tutoring and skill-building to stay on track
- College Readiness Workshops – Learn about applications, admissions, and expectations
- Financial Aid Guidance – Understand FAFSA, scholarships, and paying for college
- Family Engagement Opportunities – Support for parents navigating the college journey
- Scholarship Opportunities – Financial assistance for eligible students
A Program That Grows With You
Unlike one-time programs, GEAR UP stays with students over multiple years—providing consistent mentorship, resources, and encouragement from middle school through high school graduation.
