Course Assistants and Supplemental Instruction Leaders
In addition to tutoring services, the Academic Success Center (ASC) provides embedded peer support for courses with high enrollment, low pass rates, or pathways to specific majors, such as English or Math.
Embedded support takes the idea of tutoring to the next level. Instead of a tutor waiting for a student to come see them, the peer leader attends the class with students, holds weekly structured group study sessions, and provides individual mentoring or tutoring sessions outside of class.
We have two embedded services at the ASC, the Course Assistant or “CA” program and Supplement Instruction or “SI”. The Course Assistant Program targets Gateway courses and focuses on helping new students transition to college. Supplemental Instruction focuses on upper-level or major-specific courses.
If you enroll in a class that has a Course Assistant or SI Leader, we encourage you to reach out to them. They are trained to help you succeed. If you are interested in becoming a Course Assistant or SI Leader, please reach out to our Program Coordinator. To be eligible, you need a 3.0 GPA and must be taking at least 6 credits. Working as a Course Assistant or SI leader has several benefits, including:
- Extensive training
- Flexible hours on campus
- The opportunity to develop leadership and interpersonal skills
- The chance to meet other peer leaders who are invested in education
