Teacher Preparation Program Admission

Applications for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program is accepted twice each year. The application process is completed online. Please read the information below and click on the link provided at the end to access the online application.

The School of Education processes applications on a rolling admissions basis, however, the earlier you are admitted into the program the earlier you will be able to register into major coursework. All School of Education (SOE) pre-majors are encouraged to submit their Application for Admission to an SOE program as soon as all admission criteria have been met! “Sooner is better!”

Fall Semester Admission

Priority Deadline: Applications received by March 1st will guarantee priority registration for Summer/Fall Courses

Spring Semester Admission

Priority Deadline: Applications received by October 15th will guarantee priority registration for Spring Courses.

Teacher Preparation Program

Criteria for Admission

    1. General admission into Nevada State University. Students who have never attended Nevada State University will need to apply for college admission through the Office of Admissions.
    2. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
    3. Completed a minimum of 45 credits of coursework towards declared education degree
    4. A personal background check via Complio/American Databank or a valid substitute-teaching license.

**Northern Nevada students must obtain substitute-teaching license. Complio will not be accepted for Northern Nevada program admits. 

The following 2 requirements must be submitted with the Teacher Preparation Program Application

1. Requirement One: Submit Praxis Core Acknowledgement Form or Passing Exam Scores

Student must complete and sign the “Praxis Core-CBEST Acknowledgement Form

OR

Student must provide an official copy of passing scores for all three (reading, writing and mathematics) components of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CORE) exam

OR

Student must provide an official copy of a passing score for the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).

OR

Student must have the minimum score needed for either the ACT: Comp score of 21 or higher or SAT: Total score of 1100 or higher. The transcripts must be on file with NS and entered in the students account to be used for program admission.

*PLEASE BE AWARE: We do allow admission to the Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) without completion of the Praxis Core; CBEST; or ACT/SAT exams; however, we do ask that you have attempted either the Praxis Core OR CBEST exam prior to your final student teaching semester.

2. Requirement Two: Background Check Information – Two Options (See Below)

**Northern Nevada students must obtain substitute-teaching license. Complio will not be accepted for Northern Nevada program admits.

Option 1: Obtain a Substitute License | Cost-$180

Students may obtain a Substitute License through the Nevada Department of Education.

*A STUDENT WHO APPLIES FOR A SUBSTITUTE LICENSE IS REQUIRED TO HAVE AT LEAST 60 COMPLETED CREDITS OR AN AA DEGREE FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY (NAC 391.0897).

Option 2: Background Check through Complio/American Databank

Students may complete a $65 fingerprinting background check through the company, Complio/American Databank.

Steps:

1.) Register on the Complio|| American Databank website: Click HERE . Select “New Account”. Enter personal requested information. Select “School of Education”. Click load package. Agree to receive fingerprint forms. Ensure that your information is correct.

2.) Complio will send emailed instructions including two finger print cards. Students must take the cards and have their fingerprints rolled by an authorizing agency. Do not bend or fold fingerprint cards. Students will submit fingerprint cards via mail to Complio per email instructions.

3.) Complio will digitally upload the fingerprints to the FBI and complete a National Sex Offender search.

4.) Students will receive results within 2-5 days. Students must email Complio the results to [email protected] or [email protected]

5.) Students are required to provide a copy of the background check (FBI) to the School of Education and Complio.

NOTE: Students should apply for graduation one year prior to their anticipated student teaching semester. Additional information will be provided on degree outlines at time of admission.
